We’ve all gotten used to shortages during the pandemic, from toilet paper to new cars.

But a shortage of COVID-19 tests is more serious, as it potentially puts our health at risk. As the omicron variant has spread, it has become nearly impossible to find these tests on store shelves in many communities.

If you need one of these tests, your best bet might be turning to the internet to try to find one. The Wall Street Journal reports that online product trackers can tell you which retailers have at-home COVID-19 testing kits in stock.

If you decide to search for one of these kits, remember to be extra careful. Scammers are bilking customers with fake test kits, as we report in “How to Avoid Fake COVID-19 Test Kits.”

If you buy a test kit anywhere — online or in-store — on Jan. 15 or later, be sure to save your receipt for reimbursement. Better yet, before you buy a kit, ask your insurer if it offers kits via a network, or confirm your insurer will otherwise cover it. Doing so may save you money or a hassle, or both.
